WISDOM

WISDOM

Can you think of a better title for a book?  This one, put together by photographer/director Andrew Zuckerman, (published by Abrams, $50) compiles interviews with 51 actors, artists, thinkers, and leaders over 65! Could it be that someone has finally realized that people over 65 do indeed have WISDOM to impart?? Obviously Mr. Zuckerman has. He says “It was like going to grad school on the greatest generation…we can benefit from their wisdom.”  It has long been said that wisdom is the greatest gift one can give, and this is a lovely way to do it. Plus, the book includes a DVD of his “Wisdom” documentary.  These interviews are not only revealing and honest portraits of the interviewee, but include great photographic portraits of each as well.
The one flaw? There are more men than women interviewed. (So what else is new?) But the women he has are great. Among them, along with a little snipet from their lengthy interviews, are:
Madeleine Albright “…there is a figure called Madeleine Albright, and then there’s me.”
Judi Dench “…I get sillier as I get older.”
Billy Jean King “…you have to see it to be it.”
Vanessa Redgrave “…theatre helps people keep sane.”
Jane Goodall “…the most important thing we can do to try and get out of the mess we’ve made on this planet, both social and environmental, is to spend a little bit of time learning and thinking about the consequences of the choices we make each day.”
All in all, “Wisdom” is a really fascinating picture of some great people who still have something to say…something that just might be of help to us all…even though, and in fact BECAUSE, they are over 65.
