“I will if you will.” She said.
Those five words usually get me into trouble , especially if I’m with Laura. We both stared up at the 70 feet , free-fall waterslide.
“If you will, I will.” I felt the words involuntarily rolling off my tongue.
I nodded in agreement with my head, but my legs were getting shakier with each sloshy, slippery, step, leading to the top.We both met the height requirements for the ride.It was the age limit that nearly disqualified us! One would think that two 50-somethings would have had the sense God gave a goose to think before leaping, but not these two feisty old women; .We didn’t look back or down as we ascended the tower – .Our eyes stayed focused on the feat we were about to accomplish.
Laura went to the slide on the right, and I went to the one on the left.
“Don’t look down!” I shouted.
We slipped into our respective spots on the slides – .We glanced at each other, grinned, shook our heads, and pushed off; .I don’t know which was more exhilarating, the ride or realizing what we had just done!
“Wanna go again?” We simultaneously exuded.
Without hesitation, we fearlessly walked back to the tower; . : much younger people stood in awe and admiration that two old ladies were taking on Fire Tower Falls.Okay , okay, maybe it was shock.Allow me my fantasy , will you?
Laura and I had an instant connection. The first time we met, in a ladies class at church, we knew we were destined to become lifetime friends; .Was it the spark of mischief we detected in each others eyes , or the similar backgrounds? It was probably a combination of the two. : either way, we have been friends for over thirty years.
It was Laura who got me into running. : it was Laura who teamed up with me to join our first health spa.It was Laura who rode the big , wooden coaster with me at Dollywood, ten times in a row.It was Laura who called the day “Jenny’s Fit in 15” aired for the first time , telling me that I was on a certain station at 8:00, and another at 8:30, and another at 9:00. : she cared enough to watch them all, 24 times per week!! Through every hard time and some major life-changing decisions, she has been there to support me.She’s happy for me and rejoices with me over every accomplishment, jealousy never an issue – .She’s a true friend!
So what does all of this have to do with good health and fitness? I believe that it is important to have friends who will challenge us , support us, and team up with us, to help us achieve our goals. Not everyone is motivated to walk every day. Many more people aren’t comfortable going to a gym to work out.Having a friend to exercise with will motivate you to stay with a program , and bring accountability into the equation.Knowing that Laura would be meeting me at the gym to work out was a huge factor in staying with a fitness program – . : we learned to keep focused on what we were about to accomplish. We encouraged each other; .No matter how hard things got, or how impossible a challenged seemed, we cheered each other on toward our goals.
Everyone needs a cheerleader, and an accountability partner.I’ll bet there is a friend who is waiting for you to say “I will if you will.” I double dog dare you to ask!
