I recently read a page full of facts about us wonderful working women in the AARPs’ Jan/Feb 2010 bulletin edition.  Betsy Towner put them together in a little article called Women at Work, and even though I know we have ‘come a long way, baby’, I was still overwhelmed with some of these numbers and thought I’d share them with some of you who might not be old enough to be getting this paper yet.

In the 1900 Census only 20.6% were “engaged in gainful occupations”, and 1,124,383 women listed their occupations as “servant.”  From that to now: women hold more than half of the labor force’s top jobs, filling 51% of professional and management occupations!

And here are some more fun facts: Women over 50 make up 43.3% of the workforce, 58% of all college degrees are earned by women, 1,824,198 women have served in U.S.military buy levitra without prescription, 42% of women working in professional, management or business occupations are over 50, and there are 10.1 million businesses owned by women in the U.S.

We have indeed ‘come a long way, baby’!  BUT….still 1.5 million women made minimum wage or less, and earned 80 cents for every dollar a man earns.  So guess what?  We still have a ways to go.  And hopefully the women who make up 58% of all college degree recipiants will help us do it.
